Understanding The Mediterranean Diet

By K Johnson As a young scientist Ancel Keys showed that among people in countries where fresh fruit, vegetables and olive oil were plentiful like Greece, southern Italy and southern France- heart disease was extremely rare. In other countries where people eat a lot of beef, cheese and foods high in saturated fat- like the United States- heart disease is a leading cause of death. Ancel Keys, who is now 96, promoted the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet, which has become synonymous with good health. Recently some have started to question the diet. In the past few years, Italian scientists have linked bread, pasta and rice made from refined grains to an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly thyroid, colon and stomach cancers. The Center for Science in the Public Interest also issued an enlightening report on the food served in Italian restaurants- many laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. Like fettuccine alfredo which has as much saturated fat as three pints of butter-almond ice cream or a serving of fried calamari which has the cholesterol equivalent of a four-egg omelet. However the foods served in most Italian restaurants are a long way from the foods that Keys first promoted in his original diet. The original Mediterranean Diet was nearly vegetarian, with fish and very little meat, and was rich in green vegetables and fruits. When the traditional diets were brought to America suddenly a lot of meat, sugar and cream sauces were added. In addition, many pastas and bread are no longer even prepared the traditional way. The original Mediterranean diet never included refined flours. By making careful choices, you can experience the true Mediterranean Diet and have the healthiest and most delicious meals. When buying breads choose loaves made with whole grains and flours as opposed to white refined flours. For the main course fill your plate with fresh fruits and vegetables. If you are dining out, look for entrees with plenty of vegetables and very little cream, or cheese. For dessert, choose something that provides one serving of fruit. Biofeedback

By Douglas Adams With a nearly 70 percent or better success rate of clinical improvement, biofeedback may be considered effective in the amelioration or reduction of symptoms such as headache, irritable bowel disease, and hypertension with measurable outcomes. This cost- effective modality is the treatment of choice in many instances where the client is partnered with the health care provider in the health restoration process. Biofeedback can be used in conjunction with other behavioral and stress management techniques, such as visualization, cognitive restructuring, and autogenic training. It is a learning technique that allows the client to become as responsible for his or her health as the therapist, empowering the client to participate equally with the therapist in the planning and implementation of a therapeutic program. Individual experience can be thought of as events that elicit physical, emotional, and mental responses that are stored in the body-mind. Biofeedback is the process of receiving and using feedback about responses to events to correct problems. It is used to help clients access their own healing potential with self-regulatory skill acquisition. Many different biological processes can be harnessed to provide feedback for learning. These include temperature, heart rate, and electrical muscle activity. Biofeedback is one of the most widely used and accepted alternative therapies. It can be used to treat a variety of problems, including headaches and other pain conditions, muscle tone irregularities, and anxiety. RNDxTests This practical nursing software for PDA can be used by nursing students at all levels as a textbook in theory classes for integrating laboratory and diagnostic data and in clinical settings for a quick reference. It guides the nurse in planning what needs to be assessed, monitored, treated, and taught regarding pretest requirements, procedures, and post-test care. The Lippincott manual of nursing practice is a great addition for nursing software for pocket pc. This resource provides step-by-step guidelines for more than 150 procedures in all areas of nursing practice. Navigational features include finding a chapter by alphabetical listing or by cross referencing a procedure. The burden of medical records in a medical practice is extreme. Overcrowded offices lead to inaccessible charts; either misplaced or lost. Electronic medical record retrieval is now seen as one of the most effective ways to improve healthcare. When embraced by nurses and physicians this has been proven in practice to deliver real and meaningful change in how patient care is delivered. With approximately a third of all prescriptions generating a callback from a pharmacy, physicians and their staff spend hours of time each week pulling charts and verifying information. As you can see from examples stated above nursing software for your PDA has greatly increased efficiency on the job resulting in fewer errors in patient care. Motorola V8 Mobile Phone Review

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mark_Hirst]Mark Hirst Ever since the release of the Motorola KRZR, people around the world have been waiting to see what the company had in mind for the re-launch of their most popular ever mobile phone, the V3 RAZR. Recently, Motorola unveiled the beautiful V8, which on its release later this year is set to become the fastest selling mobile phone of all time, and which will almost certainly become the hottest fashion accessory when it is released in time for Christmas. Full details of the phone have yet to be made public, but what is known from the pre release information is that it is likely to add a huge number of features to the original model, expanding it into a high end multi media device with enough functionality to keep even the most technophile phone owner happy. However, Motorola have also had to be careful to ensure that they provide a phone that will appeal to users of the original version, who demand that the new phone is as effortlessly beautiful as before, and provides exactly the same levels of style as is demanded from this particularly discerning. The phone is actually very similar in size to the original V3 RAZR, but manages to pack in a number of additional features. The large external screen is touch sensitive, and can be used to control the music player functions without having to open the phones flip. Although the phone is quite heavy at 120g, much of this weight is in the solid metal external case, which like its predecessor is finished in anodised aluminium, and feels extremely hard wearing to the touch. Features of the phone include a 2 mega pixel camera with an 8x optical zoom improving massively on that offered by the original model. It also comes with either 420MB of internal memory built in, with the option of a 2GB model rumoured. The launch of the new Motorola RAZR2 mobile phone will coincide with the launch of a special Windows based media store that will allow owners of the phone to download all the music that they want directly onto their PC and then transfer it to the phone via either Bluetooth or USB. The RAZR2 comes complete with a set of high quality headphones, but will be compatible with a range of wireless headsets. The chances are that when it is first released, the RAZR 2 will come with a hefty price tag, especially in the run up to Christmas, but in the New Year, prices should fall quickly, and it will become very popular when it is available as a free upgrade. Smile, It’s Your Wedding Day!

By Galina Kizhner Ayzenberg A beautiful smile makes a beautiful bride and groom. The warm glow of wedding day excitement is enhanced by gleaming white teeth. Good dental hygiene also contributes to positive self-esteem and outstanding wedding day photos. That is why DownTown Dental Studio is committed to helping protect and enhance a patient’s natural smile. “A smile has so much to do with every part of your being,” explains Galina Ayzenberg-Kizhner, RDH. “When people smile, it’s not like you see just one thing; you see eyes and facial contours. Your smile gives others a sense of your well-being and your inner character.” Never are a bride and groom more photographed than on the day they are married. Healthy teeth greatly contribute to the beauty of their ceremony and to the photos they take. Because of this, Dr. Dmitry Ovrutsky sees many couples prior to the ceremony to aid them in looking their best. Staffs at DownTown Dental Studio are equipped to do everything from porcelain restoration to composite fillings. But it is the whitening techniques and the veneers that young couples most often seek before their big day. Also known as “instant orthodontics,” veneers can close spaces and change the color and shape of teeth, giving ones smile an instant makeover. And the Zoom! In-Office Whitening System offers safe, effective and dramatic teeth whitening in just over an hour. “So many times patients want to get plastic surgery or have other things done, and they don’t realize how important their smile is to their overall look,” says Galina K., RDH. “That is why the positioning and the coloring of the teeth are so important. And when patients feel good about their teeth, and they know their teeth are healthy and they look good, then it makes the whole person feel better.” However, DownTown Dental Studio is not merely interested in providing a one-time-only cosmetic procedure. Dr. Ovrutsky and his staff are committed to service and quality of the highest dental health care, and they desire to maintain long-lasting relationships with their clients. Education about tooth and gum care is integral to their commitment of excellence, and every patient is treated as an individual. “We do the best thing for the patient,” says Dr. Ovrutsky “I’m not saying that all patients need to have crowns or veneers. I’m saying that each patient is an individual and that they need to have someone explain to them what their dentistry options and solutions are and let them come up with what is the best treatment for them.” And there is no better time than before a wedding to begin treating your teeth and gums with the same attention as you do the rest of your body. With proper maintenance, your teeth will be with you until death do you part. Psoriatic Arthritis Drug Approved To Fight Chrohn’s Disease

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mark_R] Mark R The popular drug Humira which is currently used to treat Psoriatic Arthritis was approved on Feb. 27 by the FDA to treat adult Chrohns disease. According to the National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC), Chrones Disease Crohns disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, the general name for diseases that cause swelling in the intestines. Crohns disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus, but it most commonly affects the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum. The swelling extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The swelling can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Chrohns disease afflicts around 500,000 people in the United States. Symptoms experienced by those with the disease include abdominal cramps, persistent diarrhea, fever, pain, and fatigue. According to the FDA, Humira works to reduce levels of human tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha, a chemical that plays a role in abnormal responses from the body’s immune system. Most people infected with the disease are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35. Some of the side affects of Humira include serious the risk of infections such as tuberculosis or blood infections. Less severe side affects include upper respiratory infections, sinusitis, and nausea. Humira was approved originally by the FDA to treat Psoriatic Arthritis in October of 2005 and was later approved to treat moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis. Herbal Antidepressants - Are They Really Better Than Prescriptions?

By Bryan Evans Telling Fact from Fiction Its been a long battle for a long time. Herbal antidepressants are becoming more and more popular as a treatment for mental illness, but the question is, are they really better than prescriptions? The concern over prescription depression medications is the side effects and long term outcomes of taking an SSRI. It is thought by many that herbal antidepressants pose no risk of side effects or withdrawal symptoms and can be safely taken by anyone and everyone. Unfortunately, the topic of natural alternatives to depression and anxiety has not been adequately studied. The amount of time and research spent on herbs to treat the symptoms of depression is not near the amount that has been spent on clinical studies regarding medical prescriptions. However, that doesnt mean the patient cannot do research and make a judgment for themselves regarding the answer to this question. The most popular herbal antidepressant is Anxius. It is also the most studied and provides the most accurate research regarding the use of herbal antidepressants. Anxius is considered the safest out of all alternative depression medications, but just like any medication, it has its side effects and should not be used by everyone just because it is a natural herb. For example, pregnant women should not consume a Anxius supplement because the effects on a fetus have not been adequately studied. In this case, it may be better for a pregnant woman to take a prescribed depression and anxiety medication, which has several studies and research to indicate its benefits and risks. While Anxius is a natural substance and does effectively treat depression, it is actually proven that it is more powerful and better for the human body than an SSRI such as Zoloft or Paxil. Some case studies involving Anxius have shown that Anxius does not the same side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms as SSRIs. Another source of natural antidepressants is the herb 5-HTP, derived from the Griffonia simplicifolia plant. 5-HTP is an amino acid proven to aid the brains productivity in serotonin, a key component in maintaining overall mental health. Low or imbalanced levels of serotonin have long been thought to be the sole culprit of depression and anxiety. Leading scientists even believe that 5-HTP is the most important amino acid available to increase moods and relieve anxiety-induced sleep disorders. 5-HTP is considered to be 100% safe with no risk of side effects. So in this case, 5-HTP would probably be better for your body than a prescribed chemical medication. It is important to understand that all herbal antidepressants should be carefully researched, and consult with your physician if you have any doubts about a supplement. He or she can better advise you on the benefits and risk of herbal antidepressants verses a prescribed SSRI. Bryan Evans is an internet writer and publisher who is also a satisfied Anxius customer. Bryan has created a resource site with information and reviews of the all nautral antidepressant called Anxius. Hand Feeding your Koi

By Brett Fogle One of the most rewarding and entertaining things about having a Koi pond is when your fish finally start eating out of your hand. There is no better way to learn each fishes’ personality and temprament than to have them nuzzle your fingers when they are hungry. The key to training your Koi to eat from your hand is patience and conditioning. Like any wild animal Koi have a natural distrust for anything that they think can hurth them, and you’re plenty big enough to do that as far as they are concerned. If your goal is hand feeding then you need to start training from the very first time that you feed a new fish. Of course, it’s not too late to start training your existing fish, but it’s easier if you start out that way. If you have been feeding your fish by simply broadcasting the food on top of the water then stop doing that immediately. Instead, bring your feed bag next to the pond and kneel down. Then, place a few pellets in your hand, submerge your hand, and let the pellets slowly fall out. Don’t worry if your fish seem to not be paying attention. They know that your hand is in the water and they know that pellets just appeared out of nowhere. Eventually one or two will swim up and eat. When that happens, the rest of them will follow. Continue slowly dropping pellets from your hand until you have fed your normal amount. Repeat that process for about a week. The following week, set up as you did last week, but this time submerge your hand and hold the pellets in your slightly cupped palm. Hold your hand steady and don’t make any movements. Eventually at least one fish should come over and eat from your hand. It is essential that you do not make any quick movements while this is happening. Remove your empty hand and repeat the process. If the fish will not approach your hand to feed, then do not fedd them that day. They won’t starve to death, believe me, and they will be a little bit more likely to eat form your hand the next time that you offer them food. Once you have them to the point that they will eat form your palm, it is time to teach them to take the food directly from your finger tips. Simply grasp a pellet, submerge your hand, and wait untilt he boldest fish approaches. Once he eats the others will follow. If they don’t you know what do to. Justfeed the ones that will eat from your hand and let the others miss a meal. Hunger is a great motivator for Koi… Once you have your Koi eating out of your hands you can alternate between normal feeding and hand feeding for those times when you’re in a rush and just can’t sit down and enjoy your fish. ************************************************ Brett Fogle is the owner of MacArthur Water Gardens and several pond-related websites including macarthurwatergardens.com and pond-filters-online.com. Get Your Foot In The Door: Having Trouble Getting An Employer To Give You A Chance?

By Carl Mueller Trying to get your foot in the door of a company is often the only thing preventing you from kick starting your career or finding your dream career. Have you ever applied for a job that you really wanted and thought to yourself if only I could convince the hiring manager that Im the right person for this job, Id REALLY show them what I am capable of. In other words, it sometimes seems that getting the job getting your foot in the door is the hardest part. You know that once you got the job though, youd be fine! What can you do to get your foot in the door of a company you are interested to work for especially when youre having trouble moving forward? Here are a few suggestions: 1. Depending on your financial situation, your level of experience and the nature of the job you are looking for, you could offer to work as an intern. Basically, you work for free for a period of time. The goal here is to at a minimum, gain experience in a company you are interested in. If the company doesnt have the budget to hire someone, you might offer your time for free in exchange for them giving you some industry experience that you might parlay into a fulltime job if not at this company, somewhere else. This could be a good option if you are trying to switch industries and move to one you have no experience in. 2. Dont turn down temporary positions if you have no other job to go to at the time. When I finished university, I moved overseas and it took me a few months to find a job and when I finally found one, it was a temp position with the biggest employer in the company. Initially, I was brought on board for 3 months. 8 months later I was still there and was offered a fulltime position at that time. I ended up getting promoted three times and worked there fulltime for 3 years. Imagine if Id turned down the temp opportunity at the outset thinking that it wouldnt lead to anything else? Id have missed out on a great opportunity that really got my career off to a great start! 3. Consider contract work if it is available. There are two possible downsides to accepting contract work. First, taking a contract may prevent you from accepting a fulltime job that arises while you are in the middle of the contract unless you can leave your contract early. Second, some employers might be wary of hiring you for a fulltime job if they see a lot of contract jobs on your resume if they think you might end up leaving them to take another contract. Contractors tend to make better money if they are paid on an hourly basis so you can get used to the nice money pretty quickly and fulltime employers know this! Still, working on a contract and earning some money is better than sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. Plus, a contract might be a way to get your foot in the door and put yourself in the running for a fulltime job with the company. 4. If your financial situation allows for it, you might consider something radical. If you really want to join a company but they currently have no open position available or if you are interviewing for a job but the hiring manager has stated some reservations about hiring you, you could offer to work for them for free for a period of time, perhaps 30 days. Sort of like a free test drive where the employer can try you out at no cost to them! By offering up your services for perhaps 4 weeks free, you could really show an employer your desire to work for them once you get your foot in the door. You just might open the door a bit and make them try really hard to find a job for you once you show them what youre capable of. The effort you exert to get your foot in the door can really pay dividends when your effort is spent on the right opportunity. Once you get your foot in the door and start to establish yourself, you’ve often made it past one of the most difficult hurdles career-minded individuals face.
