Features vs. Benefits vs. End Results

By Karon Thackston If you’ve been in the copywriting realm for very long at all, you’ve heard the phrase “features vs. benefits.” It’s a fundamental copywriting principle and driving force behind much of what we, as copywriters, create. But there’s also another aspect to this equation. What happens after customers buy your product or service? Once they’ve used what you have to offer, what will be different in their lives? What will the end results, of their buying decision, be? Getting your customers to look at the end results of their actions can be an extremely powerful persuasion tool that you’ll want to incorporate into your copy. Let’s look at features, benefits and end results and see how all three work individually and collectively to create a targeted push to the point of purchase. Features - The Basic Outline of Your Product or Service Features, in copywriting, are a starting point. They provide a basic outline for what your customer needs to know. Features describe (most often) the attributes of a product or service. If we’re using the example of a cordless, telephone-answering system, some features might be: 5.8GHz FHSS Talking caller ID Expandable to 4 handsets Selectable ring tones Speakerphones For a person who knows nothing about cordless phones with answering machines, this list might not mean much. It’s a basic blueprint of the telephone and nothing more. Benefits - Make the Product or Service More Personal Benefits enliven the features. Benefits make the features, and the product or service, more personal. They explain how the features will improve the customer’s life in some way. Using the features list above, see what the benefits might be. (The list below was taken from Panasonic marketing materials and relates directly to their KX-TG5230M model phone.) 5.8GHz digital system: The 5.8GHz frequency lets you go anywhere in your house and still have clear reception without interfering with your home network. The frequency-hopping digital technology keeps calls secure from outside sources. Talking caller ID: No need to be within visual distance of your phone. You can hear who’s on the line before you pick up the phone. No more running to find the handset or base! Expandable: Keep a phone in any roomextra handsets cost less than other phones and don’t need a phone jack. This base unit supports a total of four handsets. Add up to three handsets for a complete set. Selectable ring tones: Customize the sound of your phone by choosing from three ring tones. Dual speakerphones: Talk directly into the base with the base speakerphone, while the handset speakerphone provides convenient hands-free calling wherever you take your handset. Benefits make the features personal. They explain how the features will be of use in the customer’s life. End Results - A Glimpse Into the Future We can take this process one step further, however. After customers buy the phone, and after they use it, what end results will they experience? As asked before, how will their lives be improved? What will the effects of their buying decision be? Let’s go back to our list and add end results as the last sentence in the benefits list. 5.8GHz digital system: The 5.8GHz frequency lets you go anywhere in your house and still have clear reception without disrupting your home network. The frequency-hopping digital technology keeps calls secure from outside sources. You’ll have complete freedom to talk with no interference on one of the most advanced systems available. Talking caller ID: No need to be within visual distance of your phone. You can hear who’s on the line before you pick up the phone. You’ll enjoy the ultimate in convenience with this feature. No more running to view the handset or base! Expandable: Keep a phone in any roomextra handsets cost less than other phones and don’t need a phone jack. This base unit supports a total of four handsets. Add up to three handsets for a complete set. Expandable phone systems are smart investments that save time and money. Selectable ring tones: Customize the sound of your phone by choosing from three ring tones. Make your phone an extension of yourself. Dual speakerphones: Talk directly into the base with the base speakerphone, while the handset speakerphone provides convenient hands-free calling wherever you take your handset. You’ll have the flexibility of speakerphones wherever and whenever you talk. Do you see what the end results have done? They’ve given the customer a glimpse into the future. The feature states that the phone offers 5.8GHz technology. The benefit goes on to explain that 5.8GHz technology is important because it offers clear reception and safety. The end result wraps things up by stating the customer will have a life filled with freedom and no interference from their highly advanced system. Other end results point out how the phone system will make each user’s life more convenient, how this smart investment will save time and money, how it will conform to ones personality and how the phone will lend flexibility to the customer’s life. When you create your copywriting plan, be sure to list the features and build your benefits as usual. But, for added power, don’t forget to include end results that will help the customers visualize how your product or service will make their lives better. 2005 http://www.copywritingcourse.com Copy not getting results? Bounce Back From the Wintertime Blahs With A Three-Day Cleansing Diet

By Nathan Fischer Wintertime leaves a lot of us feeling blah and washed out. Our skin gets dry and pale, our eyes can seem dull and lifeless and lets not even get started with the foods we eat. Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas parties and New Years Eve all came with plenty of rich, decadent dishes and calorie-laden cocktails. Its no wonder that by the time spring arrives, we could really use a pick-me-up. And those are just a few of the things a quick cleanse can remedy. Have you been plagued by chronic constipation, allergies, sinusitis, or any other chronic aches and pains? If youre tired of relying on over-the-counter medications to make it through day to day life, there might just be an unexpected culprit blockage(s) in your bodys elimination system. Basically, what this means is that you might be suffering from mucus and other wastes building up in your bodys major routes of elimination: Your lungs Your pores Your kidneys, and Your bowels. Getting rid of this waste build-up will better allow your body to get the most out of your regular diet a bit like the performance difference you see between low- and high-octane fuel. Important Things to Consider Before You Begin… Of course, the three day cleansing diet isnt for everyone. Some people may be too weak or may suffer from conditions that make the cleansing diet too dangerous to undertake. For this reason, its important to stress how vital it is to first consult with your doctor before you begin a new dietary regiment. Also, I cant stress enough that this is a diet to help you cleanse your system out, not too help you lose weight. Misuse could be extremely hazardous to your health! Now that weve covered the basics, lets delve on into the specifics of the cleansing diet. The Diet in a Nutshell… While you may come across several different variations of the 3 day cleansing diet, here are some of the things theyll all have in common: Youll have to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water each day When it comes to foods, be ready to restrict your diet to 5-6 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, preferably raw or steamed. In case you didnt get the hint, that means NO meat. If you do opt for breads or cereals (and you probably shouldnt), its important that you only chose whole grains During this 72 hour period, its important to avoid sugars, coffees, and sodas. If youre afraid youll suffer from headaches from caffeine withdrawals, you might want to begin slowly reducing your coffee intake prior to the fast. The Cleansing Diet in Action… While there are many different variations of the cleansing diet being touted by various different experts, most of them follow a pattern that looks something like this: Day 1 A complete food fast, water only Day 2 5 or 6 servings of fruit and fruit juice only (water is still a must) Day 3 5 or 6 servings of vegetables and veggie juice only (water is still a must) Day 4 Go back to your regular diet Of course, variations do exist, and with a little research, you should have no trouble finding one suitable for your own unique needs. Three days later, a whole new, detoxified woman will be looking back at you in the mirror! About the Author Nathan Fischer writes for BeautyProductsUSA. Bubbles - We Don’t Need No Stinking Bubbles

By Dawn Worthy How many times have you seen someone walk up and push a lit elevator button? Dont we all know that doesnt get the elevator there any faster? Yet, there are millions of us that just cannot resist the temptation to re-push that button because we secretly believe that it will. This is also true of our Pavlovian attachment to the belief that bubbles are an indicator of efficacy in soaps and detergents. I know, I know; this is soap heresy. Still, consider your dishwasher detergent. If you have ever attempted to use it to wash dishes in the sink; your lust for bubbles went unsatisfied. Yet, dishwasher cleaned dishes represent the pinnacle of hygiene. How do we reconcile the obvious conflict between the fact of clean versus the perception of clean? As a rule, we dont and as a result, we let the whiz kids in marketing lead us around by the bubbles. In the meantime, we bubble our way into wasting water, polluting the environment, irritating our skin and not necessarily coming out clean. Consider for a moment what happens when youre cleaning the tub after a shower or bath. Think about the amount of time you run the water after the dirt and water are gone to get the bubbles down the drain. Surely there are babies, thirsty in a desert somewhere in the world that could live for weeks on the water consumed by bubble rinsing alone. In the 1960s we decided phosphates were a bad thing because we noticed that streams and rivers were bubbling up all over the world behind processed wastewater dumping. The kids over in research and development jumped right on the impending bubble crisis and devised different bubbling agents. Although the rivers arent bubbling anymore, it is important to remember that one companys environmentally friendly agent can be another local residents eco-terrorist. Cant you see it now? The oversized cast iron bathtub over-overflowing with creamy bubbles. Its the poster child for luxury, relaxation and romance. One very popular method of creating a stronger film, the reason for profuse and durable bubbles, is coconut oil. 100% coconut oil soap is the only soap that will bubble up in salt water. Wow! That is amazing bubble power but in concentrations as low as 30% coconut oil is drying to the skin. Sometimes, manufacturers correct for the drying by adding more ingredients. Sometimes, they leave you to fend for yourself. More importantly, the labeling isnt going to give you a clue what they did. Remember a few lines back when I said that stronger film makes stronger bubbles? Have you ever showered or bathed and started to towel off only to discover that you are covered in a (Whats the word Im looking for?) Oh yeah, film. So much for clean. In short, (I know its a little late for that) Im not saying we have to turn our collective backs on the bubbles. We just need to understand the difference between clean, the perception of clean and the respective costs of each. Dawn and Elias Worthy, owners of Fresh From the Farm, offers a complete line of biodegradable, vegan friendly, organic botanical soap. What is in the soap is good. What isn’t in the soap is even better. There are no artificial ingredients. There are no manufacturing, coloring or fragrance additives. It’s simple, Aunt Ann’s Garden Soap is naturally good. Five Quick Steps to Your Marketing Plan

By Kelly Biedny Marketing is essentially project management. A marketing plan consists of several projects designed to promote your small business using various methods. There are five basic steps to follow when putting together your marketing plan that will ensure you get the most marketing bang for your buck. Step One: Marketing Goals The first step is to write down the marketing goals you have for your small business. Whether it be increasing sales by 10%, releasing a new product, or improving online sales, you should write down all of your goals. Once you’ve got everything written downs, go over each goal and make sure it is realistic (do you have the staff to service 10 new clients?), if not, revise. Step Two: Set Your Marketing Budget Before you can plan how to achieve your goals, you’ve got to know who much you can invest in the methods you’ll use. Be realistic about your budget and don’t spend more than you’ll make back; there are plenty of low cost ways to market. But, DO invest in marketing, it will pay-off. If you’re not willing to spend money on your small business’ success, you devalue your products or services. Plus, if customers forget about you, they don’t buy from you. Step Three: Evaluate Marketing Methods There are many ways to market your small business. In his book, The Marketing Toolkit for Growing Business, Jay Lipe shares a list of what he calls marketing “vehicles.” His list includes (Taken from The Marketing Toolkit for Growing Businesses, by Jay Lipe, 2002): Newspaper Ads Magazine Ads Yellow Pages Television Ads Cable TV Ads Radio Advertising Direct Mail Billboards Telemarketing Internet Publicity Trade Shows Event Marketing Direct Sales I’d also like to add a few more methods or “vehicles:” networking events public speaking article marketing press releases e-mail event sponsorship donating Another great resource for inexpensive marketing methods is Making Dollars Out of Cents: 101 Tips for the Frugal Marketer,” by Heather Jacobson. This ebook offers just what it says, 101 great tips that are inexpensive yet, effective. Based on your goals and budget, choose the methods that will work best to help your small business achieve the desired outcome. Some of the methods will support multiple goals, others will revolve around one goal. Just choose the methods that best suit your small business. Step Four: Time-line Out Each Project Once you’ve chosen the marketing methods you’ll use to achieve your goals. It’s time to put them in the calendar. Each goal should have a deadline for achievement and each method should have a target completion date. Work backward from these dates, planning out when each part of the goal/marketing method needs to be done to move to the next step of the process, (For example, if the method is a postcard mailing, the post card needs to be designed by approx. 2 weeks before it is mailed, printed by one week before the mail date and labels need to be pulled the day before, etc…). As you calendar out each item, be conscious of how busy you’ll be and balance out your daily/weekly to-do’s and the frequency your methods will ‘hit’ your customers/audience. Balance out each communication to ensure there’s no overload. Step Five: Execute! Once you’ve got your plan and timeline, it’s time to get started. Outsource the work you can’t or don’t want to do, but make sure things keep on track. Review everything for consistency of message and feelremember, every time you communicate you are reinforcing your small business ‘brand’ with the public. Junk Food Is Not Easier To Eat

By Dr. Jamie Fettig There is something to be said about fast food being more convenient then healthy food that helps you be thin. I will give you that. But wait, how about this. Convenient when? It is definitely convenient now. How about later, when you don’t have enough energy to do anything but go to sleep? Or when you cannot focus because all you feel like doing is taking a nap. Or is it more convenient when you have indigestion and heartburn and don’t feel like doing anything? We live in a world of now. A world of cause and effect. But the problem is that most people only look at immediate cause and immediate effect. Not fully realizing the body does not work on an instantaneous process. If you put something in your mouth, it can take hours to process the food, even days if your system is not working so good. So when people get heart burn, or are tired, or get headaches they often miss the fact that it may have been something other than what happened immediately before. You cannot “save time”. You can only spend it wisely. And no matter how convenient it may seem at the time, food that is “fast” never saves you time in the long run. This is also a little trick that is interesting and works everywhere in your life. The solution to why it seems like there is never “enough time.” It is because we falsely believe we are doing things that save time. Almost everything you do to “save time” only ends up costing you more time. If you eat fast food because you are in a rush, you will lose at least double the time later you supposedly saved. How much time is wasted because you have no energy to do what you want at the end of the day? How much time is wasted because you don’t feel like doing anything? How much time do you spend not feeling ready to go? How much time do you spend being unproductive because of brain fog? These are the type of things that your body does when you eat fast food to “save time”. And these are only the semi-immediate effects. Later in life your body starts doing all kinds of things that slow you down and don’t allow you to do everything you want. This is in a large part due to what you put into your body. Because as you remember, if you try and build a brick house with rocks and stones, sooner or later it will fall apart. Is junk food really that bad? I also share this and more with you in my free e-course that this article is a part of. Go to http://www.HealthyEatingDiet.com to get the full e-course. Dr. Jamie wants to help give you Permanent Results with his “non-diet.” He is also giving you dozens of valuable free gifts to “ethically bribe” you into helping him make his new book, “The Ultimate Non-Diet” a #1 best seller. Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Guidelines

By Michael Russell Aromatherapy is one of the best ways to relax yourself, whether through burning oils to accompany meditation, or using it them in a wonderful massage. However, we must be careful with using essential oils as the wrong amount or the wrong mixture can bring about some serious side effects. Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids used in aromatherapy that can be harmful if not used carefully. However, including aromatherapy and massage in your lifestyle shouldn’t really cause undue paranoia or worry. The important thing to remember is to always treat essential oils as medicines. Follow the suggestions given below as well so you can be on your way to calmly and safely enjoying the numerous benefits that aromatherapy offers. The safety guidelines that you are about to read are not a complete reference for the proper use of essential aromatherapy oils. Use common sense; when in doubt about the oils used on you, always consult a trained aromatherapy practitioner or a physician. 1. Essential oils are flammable. When lighting a burner to heat scented oils, do not leave the room unless the flame is put out. Always keep your burners at a safe distance from curtains, paper and alcoholic substances. 2. Do not apply undiluted essential oils directly on the skin. Some oils are exempted from this; however, only use undiluted oils if you have attained a significant education and sufficient experience with them. Lavender and tea tree oils are cited by a large number of aromatherapy practitioners as being oils that can be safely used undiluted however this should only be done very rarely as some individuals can be severely sensitive. So to be safe, the rule of thumb is to avoid use any undiluted essential oil. 3. Not all essential oils can be used for aromatherapy. Herbal oils from bitter almond, camphor, pennyroyal, onion, wintergreen, horseradish and sassafras are some that should only be used by specially qualified aromatherapy practitioners. Even most practitioners do not use them. 4. With oils, less IS More. Follow directions in home kits. Usually, the smallest amount of essential oils required will get the job done. If the label says use only a drop, for example, don’t use more. 5. Children should never use essential oils without the presence of an adult who is knowledgeable about their use. Children are often attracted to essential oils because of their wonderful smells. Some oils smell like food (like vanilla) and citrus oils can smell like something safe to drink. Always keep essential oils away from the reach or children. Again, remember to treat these oils like medicines that are poison in ignorant hands. 6. If you are pregnant, or suspect you are, it is safer to avoid essential oils. Asthma sufferers, as well as epileptics, should not use essential oils. People with other health conditions, such as allergies, should also consult a physician because some essential oils can cause sensitization or severe allergic reactions. If you are using a new oil for first time, do a skin patch first on a small area of skin, like the inner arm. Apply a small amount of the diluted essential oil (again, never use essential oils undiluted on the skin) on the inner arm and apply a bandage on it. Wait 24 hours and check if there is any form of skin reaction. Even if a common essential oil is not known to cause skin irritation, this step should not be overlooked. An oil may not irritate you, but it may still irritate someone else. It is important that you always keep that difference in mind. 7. Essential oils should not be swallowed or ingested. Essential oils should only be taken internally if you have received a detailed consultation and a prescription from a trained and qualified aromatherapy practitioner with the knowledge of your physician. Choosing Wedding Food

By Vicki Churchill So the wedding is booked the venue sorted, how about the wedding food what are you going to do about that?, Are you having a few people for a sit down meal and then a buffet later for the people who are only coming later in the evening. Or maybe a sit down meal for all, and a buffet later in the evening for all. Whatever your choice, the wedding food has to be considered carefully. It is nice to have something a little bit different but can prove difficult if you choose something that a lot of people may not like. For the wedding food it is probably better to have something fairly simple that most people will like especially if it is a sit down meal. If you are having buffet then the wedding food can contain some more exotic dishes as there should be plenty of choice for all. You will need to think carefully about caterers, some venues will have a short list of caterers who can supply the wedding food and you can expect these to be fairly reliable as they would not be recommended if there had been a problem on a previous occasion. Now you have to choose what to have for the wedding food, most caterers will have a menu from which you can choose either the formal sit down meal or a buffet and even a hog roast which are proving to be quite popular in recent years although this will obviously depend on the time of year. Another great thing to remember and always ask your caterer is that some will now actually let you sample the food at a pre-tasting day, these have proved very popular as you get a very good idea of the quality of the wedding food and also the presentation as well. Sometimes something sounds very nice on the menu but when you sample it you realize it is not very practical or in fact you just do not like it even though it sounded wonderful when you read it from the menu. You can usually take your partner or mother, anyone you like really and they can also sample the food. This can be quite helpful as they may come up with suggestions that you have not even thought off as well as give an honest opinion on what they think. Even if you know exactly what you want it is worth sampling the food as it is a very enjoyable afternoon out, plus its free lunch for all!! Always ask for references and also ask your friends for recommendations it is important to get this part perfect as this is something that all your guests will remember. Used Car Bankruptcy Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Seth_Miller]Seth Miller Used car bankruptcy loans are available to persons who have recently filed for bankruptcy. There are many business enterprises extending bad credit used car loan programs to people who have faced bankruptcy, foreclosure, and repossessions. Car dealers themselves may provide the loan, or you can get it from other sources. Once a person is declared bankrupt, it is vital for him to establish a new credit account before opting for a mortgage loan. The only way to improve his credit score is to maintain regular payments after bankruptcy. It is recommended to wait for at least six months before applying for another loan. This is because immediately after bankruptcy, the interest rate charged on auto loans is usually much higher than that for an average loan. This, in turn, will increase your monthly car payment. However, with a sizable down payment, it is easier for borrowers with bad credit to obtain financing for a used vehicle. If you are taking the used car bankruptcy loan from the dealer himself, make sure to get the used car checked out by an independent mechanic. If the dealer does not encourage an appraisal of the car, it is a clear indication that the car has some problems. Economic forecasts indicate that auto loan interest rates are likely to fall in future. To obtain an auto loan is a lot easier these days, regardless of creditworthiness. There are quite a few options available for selecting an appropriate lender for financing a car. Nowadays, not only are banks and credit unions providing used car bankruptcy loans to people with flawed credit, so are many finance companies. Applying for a used car loan through the Internet can save money and time. Many firms provide online financing assistance with used car loans for people with bad credit. Street Theater Marketing and the Naked Cowboy

By Cathy Stucker Several major corporations have launched a new type of advertising campaign. They hire actors, musicians and other performers to promote their products and services on the streets of major cities. The promotion may be obvious, such as musicians singing songs about cell phone use on street corners, or it may be more subtle (perhaps even slightly deceptive). In either case, the idea is to bring marketing to customers in different, unexpected ways. A cell phone company hired actors to pose as tourists at several New York attractions, and ask passers-by to take their pictures with a new phone. Other actors took the phones to hot nightspots and other locations. These actors did not identify themselves as actors or marketers, and the people they encountered may have believed they were simply customers using the new phone. Although the technique used in this case was considered by many to be deceptive, the idea of using performance to sell is not necessarily wrong. Another cell phone company hired musicians to stand on street corners and in other high-traffic areas and sing songs about using cell phones safely and courteously. In that case, it was clearly a marketing message, but delivered in a unique and entertaining way. Of course, this isn’t limited to the big guys. This is a form of guerilla marketing that can be done on a small budget, too. The Naked Cowboy has used street performances to attract lots of attention for his singing career. Although he hasn’t had a hit record, he does have a web site where you can hear his songs, view his photos, and buy products (including a CD, t-shirts and more). Use your imagination to develop a piece of street theater that will ethically create positive buzz about your business. Your goal may be to attract a crowd to hear your sales message, get media attention or simply create greater awareness of your company and products. Copyright Cathy Stucker.
